National Park Service News Release For Immediate Release – August 31,2010 Contact: Chief Ranger, George Elmore (620) 285-6911 Changes to Labor Day Weekend Activity Schedule Experience the excitement of a working frontier fort as Fort Larned National Historic Site hosts Labor Day Weekend activities September 4, 5, and 6, 2010. Living history demonstrations and activities will be held all three days of the event from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Admission is free. Fort Larned National Historic Site is located six miles west of Larned on Kansas Highway 156. Some of Fort Larned National Historic Site’s Labor Day Weekend activities have been rescheduled. “A Sneak Preview of Restoration in the North Officers’ Quarters” has been added for Sunday, Sept. 5 at 2:00 P.M. in lieu of the previously-scheduled Santa Fe Trail presentation by Dr. David Clapsaddle. Clapsaddle’s program, “A Quest for Clara,” has moved to Monday, Sept. 6 at 3:00 in lieu of the ranger program originally scheduled for the same time. The “Other events will continue as planned. The program “A Quest for Clara,” is about the capture of Clara Blinn and her two year old son Willie in 1868. They were at the Cheyenne Indian village on the Washita on Nov. 27, 1868 and tragically both were killed during the melee when troops of the 7th Cavalry under Lt. Col. Labor Day Weekend Activities at Fort Larned National Historic Site
Experience the excitement of a working frontier fort as Fort Larned National Historic Site hosts Labor Day Weekend activities September 4th, 5th, and 6th! Living history demonstrations and activities will be held all three days of the event from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Admission is free.
Fort Larned will be abuzz with activity as park staff and volunteers portray the living fort as it was in the 1860s and 1870s. Watch soldiers perform rifle and cannon demonstrations, blacksmiths working raw metal into finished products and bakers creating meals for the troops. Interact with living history interpreters throughout the site including ladies of the post wearing elaborate Victorian dresses and soldiers in historic uniforms.
This year’s event will also feature an exhibit by artist Rebecca Drach of Saint John, KS. Drach specializes in oil painting and enjoys painting portraits and portrait scenes. The exhibit, supported by the Santa Fe Trail Creative Arts Guild, will be on display in the park visitor center. Each day will feature other special demonstrations in the morning and talks held in the Fort Larned air conditioned visitor center in the afternoon. The special programs presented by park staff and volunteers are scheduled as follows:

2:00 History of “The Medal of Honor” by Park Ranger Roy Hargadine

4:30 Flag Retreat Ceremony, complete with cannon fire
Sunday September 5
11:00 Demonstration of artillery and small arms used on the plains
1:00 “Destruction of the 1867 Cheyenne/Sioux Village” by Park Ranger Roy Hargadine
2:00 “History Along the Santa Fe Trail” by Dr. David Clapsaddle
3:00 “Connections: Fort Larned and the National Parks" by Park Ranger Nathan King
4:30 Flag Retreat Ceremony, complete with cannon fire
Monday September 6
11:00 Demonstration of artillery and small arms used on the plains
1:00 Quartermaster Program, “Keeping the Fort Supplied” by Park Ranger Roy Hargadine
2:00 Preservation of the Fort Larned Archeological Collection” by Park Ranger Mike Seymour
3:00 "Connections: Fort Larned and the National Parks" by Park Ranger Nathan King
4:30 Flag Retreat Ceremony, complete with cannon fire
