Include Fort Larned National Historic Site in your next family outing. Step back in time into the authentic history of the Old West with a visit to FORT LARNED, one of the "Best Preserved Frontier Forts" that still remains from this colorful period in our history. Located 6 miles west of Larned on Highway 156, the Fort was built in 1859 to protect travelers on the Santa Fe Trail. The Fort also served for several years as an Indian agency for the Cheyenne, Kiowa, Comanche and Plains Apache tribes. The National Park Service operates this National Historic Site, which includes a visitor center with a museum, bookstore, library and audio-visual programs. Living history interpreters are frequently on duty in the summer and for special events to demonstrate the lives of the soldiers and civilians who lived at the Fort. Friendly and knowledgeable park rangers are always on duty to help you enjoy and learn from your visit. Visitors may tour the Fort’s ten sandstone buildings with more than 30 rooms fully restored and accurately furnished to the period or guided tours can be arranged with advance reservations. These include barracks, hospital, blacksmith shop, commissary, blockhouse, post school, arsenal, Quartermaster storehouse, officers’ quarters and the post bakery with its massive wood-fired brick oven. Many famous people visited the Fort during its active years including Buffalo Bill, Wild Bill Hickok, George Armstrong Custer, Philip Sheridan and Indian Chief’s Black Kettle, Satanta and Yellow Bear. Fort Larned is one of the most outstanding historic sites on the Great Plains and should not be missed by anyone with an interest in the history of the West.
